Sir Stanley Spencer (1891 to 1959)

Sir Stanley Spencer (1891 to 1959) a Royal Academician  who died on 14 December 1959 had spent a couple of years at Leonard Stanley from 1939 to 1940, where he stayed at the White Heart.

I have to confess that I am bit of an art philistine and find modern art a waste of money and gallery space but these paintings are just inspirational.  According to the Leonard Stanley Website he did twenty three paintings during this time and his drawings "filled many scrap books". He also started work on the "War Artist" commission at Port Glasgow shipyards. The work for this period that I have found on the web is absolutely stunning and includes a painting inspired by a visit to a wool shop in Stonehouse, Farm Pond, Leonard Stanley as well as Village Gossips (owned by Cheltenham Art Gallery). According to the Tate Website his output includes five landscapes.

It would be really great if the Stroud Museum would be able to organise an exhibition of his work whilst he was based in the Stroud area. I believe it would be a real tourism opportunity to promote the artistic work which has been created within the Stroud area as well as giving Stroud people a real opportunity to understand and celebrate the artistic contribution of an internationally respected painter made whilst living in the area.
