H Wheatley and Sons

13 April 1928 Journal Reported Death of H Wheatley on Tuesday 11 April 1928

The news of the death of Mr Henry Wheatley of “Gault” Belmont Road, Stroud was received with profound sorrow by a large circle of friends and acquaintances. He had been suffering with a cold but visited his garden on Good Friday. On Saturday other complications developed (pneumonia) and he peacefully passed away about 8-30 on Tuesday Morning, at the age of 69. Deceased was head of H Wheatley and Sons builders, a firm which can boast of over 100 years existance. Belmont Road, once the rendezvous of allotment-holders was made pretty by the aid of the fine artizans's dwellings which he erected- and in one of these he chose to live, and died there.

He had recently built houses at Gloucester and Tewkesbury. Of the late Mr. Wheatley it can truly said that this was a man of good principles, an ideal employer, who took off his coat with his men and would not ask them to undertake critical work which he himself would not do. He was one who had gained the admiration by his quiet demeanour and upright conduct, all of whom he came in contact: and the upper part of town is left poorer by his passing. He leaves a widow, four sons and two daughters – (one Miss Lillian Wheatley, R.R.C. Of Detroit who has been notified of her fathers death by cable, and is sailing home)- to mourn with whom the greatest sympathy is felt.
