In 1928 Saunders stood for election to the Urban District Council

23 March 1928 Stroud Journal published a pen portrait (including photo) of all 27 candidates.

Mr Edward Ernest Saunders of 2 Ashmead Cottages, Horns Road Stroud is a retired inspector of postmen is the 3rd nominee of the Labour Party. He was a candidate at the lat election but was just defeated, being 19th on the list. Upon the Death of Councillor H Llewellyn he was elected without opposition to fill the vacancy and during his short term of office he has been a regular attendant at Council and committee meetings.

He was elected 15th of the 18 elected to the Council.
