In 1928 Verney stood for election to the Urban District Council

Mr Richard John Verney of 15 Gloucester Street Stroud is seeking re-election as a member of the “group” has served on the Council for a number of years but has not held office. He is a regular attendant at Council meetings and although his voice is not often heard at these public gatherings he renders good service to committee. He is a staunch churchman, being one of the sidesmen at the Stroud Parish Church. He is also an active member of the Traders' Association, being an ex-president.
Verney lost his seat in the election coming 24 out of 27 for 18 seats
