On 23 March 1928 the Stroud Journal published pen portraits (alongside photographs) of the 27 candidates
“Mr William Whitting Bateman of 21 Gloucester Street, Stroud, is a newcomer to local government affairs, but he is well known in the town as a successful businessman. Since the war he has carried on the business of tobacconists and sports outfitter in Gloucester Street and last year opened a new shop in Kendrick Street. He is standing independently.
He was unsuccessful on this occassion.
