Batemans is a well known sports shop that also does a roaring trade as an official stockist of school uniform. The business is still family owned and long may it remain so.
The shop's website can be found at http://www.batemanssports.co.uk/
The shop's website claims that the business started in Stroud in 1893. We are unsure but think this is the probably the longest operating family business in Stroud.
The Stroud Journal in 1928 reports William Whitting Bateman as a “well known and successful businessman” who operated a tobacconists and sports outfitters at 21 Gloucester Street. In 1927 he open a new shop in Kendrick Street.
W W Bateman stood for election to the UDC in 1928, being unsuccessful on that occassion.
